The Good Shepherd
Sa week is it that we.
In this song, there's a clear distinction. And there are things we know that true about God, those two are the same. That God and David are not humans. God is far superior to Eve, human and God. And what's true about him is eternally true and unshakable.
But what is true about humans is fragile. Something can be true about me today and not be true about me today. I can make you a promise. As much as I want to keep that promise, I might make it tomorrow. There's certain things that are different about God.
So I want us to think about this song. I want us to look at this song and see what we can learn about God that is eternally true.
We can learn about ourselves that we hope to be true. Things that ought to be true. We need to examine ourselves. Because if there's a great short call when it comes to arguments reading the Bible is that we only think way too highly of ourselves. Just think about this all that time.
So the first thing I want to look at is this. I'm going to distribute this. First is this. We need to rest. As we look at Psalm 24:30, we need to rest in what's true about God.
There are things that David tells us about God here. Those are true and unchanging. And we get to rest in those until we get comfortable and compliment and assume waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness.
His anxiety, even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
True about God and mercy is that he is the shepherd of his sheep. You see, this psalm isn't just for all people. Across all times and all places. Guys are making these promises by himself. These promises by him lead us to just everybody.
He is making these promises to those who are his. In Matthew, it says that Jesus looks out.
John 10 Jesus says, by Himself, I am the good Shepherd. Know that he is connecting himself to this truth scripture.
So if you have repented of your sins and you've trusted Jesus, you can be certain you can rest in this truth that Jesus is sinner.
It gives us peace and safety. You're an animal and you're on edge. Recently. Got some cats.
I still haven't gotten used to all the noises yet.
Because they're at peace right in that area.
Just to be clear here in this song, these are spiritual blessings that we find ourselves having in this shepherd.
All these things are promises that God makes to those who are in Him. We need to hang our hands on those scores. We need to rest in these certain truths about God and these promises that God has given us that if we wanted to be, will do these things.
Perhaps the most pervasive thing in all of scripture is God's passion for God.
If God isn't first and foremost committed to himself in the pursuit of praise of his own glory, his love for people and not see God's first concern in all of creation is his own form. That's why God works in all the ways that he works. God wants to be known among the nations and he acts accordingly to that purpose. So why does God lead us past the waters and gives us comfort and peace and leads us down the paths of righteousness and restores our soul? Why does he do all of that?
The answer here in the psalm is saying that as we as his people rest in these truths, and this is why we have to rest in these truths and live as if they're true lives out amongst unbelievers and lost world as if these things are true. We have to do that because that is what brings the most delivery to Jesus. We live different than the rest of the world.
This is always possible. God's ways. In First Kings, chapter 8, Solomon is dedicating the temple. Here's what he says in verses likewise, when the forehead is not missions and righteousness missions isn't new to the New Testament. God is always about his glory among the nations.
And Solomon says here, when you do work amongst your people, Israel, the nations will hear about it and the people that will pray to you.
Chapter 2, verse 12 says this.
He doesn't say he will send an angel or he'll send a messenger, or he'll send a helper or he'll get to us when he ends. He said he says that he is with us. With the promised personal presence of God.
He prepares a table for us us in the presence of our enemies, sandstorms.
He wants that mercy.
Brothers and sisters, before we jump to the second part of where David is talking about himself, we can put ourselves into that song and talk about ourselves. Before we do that, we need to recognize that these things are true about God. He loves us. He is our shepherd and we are his sheep. These are promises that we can thank so we can rest comfortably.
We don't have to do anything. Those are true about God. We just sit back and relax and trust God. But there are things that ought to be true about you. It's that we ought to to strath.
You ought to run towards these things as God's people. But I don't notice that phrase run in the spirit towards what ought to be true about these things says that we ought to be that ought to be true about us and want us to read this song and just think so highly of ourselves.
These are things we ought to really wrestle with as God's need. Anything that God gives us everything we need. And we ought to be content with what he has given us. And we can read that song say, hey, the Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want the next breath.
Wanting something, wanting more, wanting bigger, wanting better. Want what we want. Don't ask God what you want me to have. Ask what do I want? And we chase after those dreams are to say brothers and sisters, we ought to be content with our shepherd so that we can genuinely say the Lord is my shepherd.
Shall not we say that? And we just so highly of ourselves now, hey man, whatever struggles I can handle without we don't wrestle with the truth that it's difficult to go through suffering, it's difficult to go through pain, it's difficult to go through valleys. And we fear evil all the time. We fear what's going to happen to us.
The third thing that ought to be true is this that we ought to be comforted by a drive this guy's from Rectus of God that when we get stepping out of line and he gives us that nudge back in when we get off track and he pulls us back in with the shepherd's hood, does that really comfort us? Do we like that? Are we open to that? Because the truth is most of us, maybe all of us, maybe none of us like correction. We don't like to be told to be challenged that any sort.
And I've believed my life or I've been told my life that God's word went us a different direction. Are genuinely confident by God's leading. He's given us instruction here in his word. He's told us what is good and right and true. And from time to time what we believe and what we think, what we prefer.
We've always heard as contrary to God's word in those comments. That's God.
That's what we ought to strive for as gods.
Last thing I want to say spills is a waste. The overflow that we hear this passage. Overflow is a see as God's people, as he is doing what he has promised us he will do, place for us at the table, guiding, shepherding, loving, caring for us as he is doing all of those things he is pouring into our lives to the point where our lives ought to overflow. As that overflow happens, what happens to those people around us? Well, hopefully we don't get tasted that same thing, right?
Whatever's filling up inside of us will begin to overflow into the lives of those around us. So I want to ask you, is your life as you live it day out, is your life overflowing with the goodness of God that others know that you are?
Is he really guiding and leading and protecting and giving me provision? We don't have to question that. We don't have to wonder is he actually going to be there? Because he promises he will. But what we do have to wrestle with in this psalm is and I want it and I fear evil and I am comforted by God as my love.
Brothers and sisters, I hope you have a resounding yes, these things are true about me that in the power of us we are running after God in these areas.
But if I ask God is the song and are certain that someday will be with him forever. If not, I would love to talk to you today about how you can make sure that that's true. But it means repent of your sins and trust in Jesus.
Father, we ask now that you'll be with us during this time of invitation that we would consider if we are passionate.
